The Gauntlet Portfolio
During the 2001/02 school year, I did some illustrations for the Gauntlet,
the student newspaper at the University of Calgary. This portfolio shows
off some of the results of my labour. They're organized in chronological
order.
Please note that while I drew all of these images, some were coloured by
other members of the Gauntlet staff, and where that's the case, there's
a * next to the image title.
120 Channel Universe
This illustration was for an article debating the use of having over 100 television
channels to choose from. I like adding lots of little details to my images, and
this was a good opportunity to do just that.

I'm Sorry*
When the Premier of Alberta, Ralph Klein, started a fight with homeless
people after a drinking spree, The Gauntlet published a critical article.
I was the lucky guy who got to draw him! He's a favourite subject of mine.
|
Catholicism*
A Gauntlet staffer wrote an article arguing that in the spirit of Christianity,
the Catholic church ought to spend some of its wealth on poverty-stricken
nations; this is my illustration for the article.
|
Pepsi 101
This was a fun illustration! The article was a spoof news item claiming that
Pepsi had purchased the University and was planning new Pepsi-themed buildings
and classes. Here, Britney Spears is a guest speaker in Film Studies.
|
Dasani Bath*
For an article on clean water: At first I considered drawing a "sexy" girl
showering in Dasani, but I decided to go the humourous route instead.
|
Free Speech*
The lone colour illustration, and I didn't even get to colour it! At least it's
not my fault the pants are white and blue. The article was about the difference
between free speech and shooting one's mouth off.
|
Queen Nothing*
This one is for an article arguing that Canada ought to "disown" the Queen of
England, so to speak. She still has some political significance in the Country
currently.
|
King Ralph
The masterpiece of the semester! We return to Ralph Klein as a Gauntlet
writer talks about the Klein government's financial mistakes in the face of
a province-wide teachers' strike.
|
Collage of Rexes
A collage of eight individual illustrations designed for the Gauntlet's year-end
sports report card: the character is the school mascot, Rex. They didn't
get used, sadly.
|
Money Gun
This illustration was for an article about globalization. The idea being
that first-world nations wage war on less-developed ones using their economic
power.
|
Trench Coat
A moody illustration for the Gauntlet fiction supplement. The illustration
follows the action in the short story it is based on.
